0.2475 pitch coil or spiral

0.2475" pitch spiral is very similar to the 4:1 pitch plastic coil (difference of 0.0005" in per loop). This pitch was designed to slightly modify the 4:1 pitch punch pattern to perfectly centre 44 holes on an 11 in binding edge and still use the 4:1 pitch coil. This makes it easier to automate the coil insertion process. Coil is available in 6 mm to 30 mm in the 0.2475" pitch.

6

6

6 mm pitch coil or spiral

6 mm simply means that there are four holes per inch on the edge of the document. The holes for this style are usually either round or oval shaped and depending on the size and spacing of the hole pattern. Supplies for binding documents with 6 mm pitch coil are available in sizes ranging from 6 mm up to 50 mm in diameter.

B

Back cover

A back cover is usually a cardboard/polyprop cover with higher grammage and is used for a brochure or a calendar as last sheet in order to give strength or a corporate identity.

Binding / Loose-leaf binding

Binding is a procedure where loose leafs are put together to a book or a calendar by means of the corresponding binding method (e.g. wire comb binding, plastic comb binding or spiral binding).

Especially for wire comb binding the term "closing" is used, as the open wire comb where the loose leafs were put in before has to be closed by pressing.

In the field of spiral binding the word "spiralizing" is often used for the closing procedure.

Binding width

The binding width is measured in inches or millimetres and relates to the length of the element to be used for RENZ RINGWIRE®, plastic comb or spiral binding.

Block thickness

The block thickness indicates how thick the product (calendar or brochure) is. It is usually measured in millimetres.

Book binding style

Most common cover style. Separate front and back covers. Opens easily back to back.

Calendar binding style

A wire bound calendar with or without a hanger.

Calendar hanger

A calendar hanger is a preformed metal piece with a semi-circular middle and is bound into a calendar by two pieces of RING WIRE.

Calendar hangers

Loose hangers are available

in 5 profiles:

- Form 2, 3 & 4

- Euro hanger

- Straight (RENZ KAS system)

Calendar hangers on reels

Hangers on reels increase productivity avoiding the need to load individual calendar hangers into a dispenser.

Carrier

Carriers are usually white in colour and are similar in thickness to a file holder. A carrier holds the pouch as it is run through the laminator. This helps prevent the hot glue, some of which leaks from the sides of the pouches during the process, from gumming up the rollers. The carrier prevents the rollers from getting sticky, which helps to prevent the lamination pouch from wrapping around the rollers inside the laminator.

Cased in binding style

Standard wire glued into a hard case offering all the related advantages.

Closing bars

Sets are required for each individual wire diameter. The Renz closing bars guarantee a perfect round close every time.

Coil binding

PVC element is virtually indestructible, available in a range of pitches

Coil or spiral 0.2475 pitch

0.2475" pitch spiral is very similar to the 4:1 pitch plastic coil (difference of 0.0005 in per loop).

Coil or spiral 6 mm pitch

6 mm simply means that there are four holes per inch on the edge of the document. The holes for this style are usually either round or oval shaped and depending on the size and spacing of the hole pattern. Supplies for binding documents with 6 mm pitch coil are available in sizes ranging from 6 mm up to 50 mm in diameter.

Cold lamination

Cold roll laminators use a plastic film which is coated with an adhesive and glossy backing which does not adhere to the glue. When the glossy backing is removed, the adhesive is exposed, which then sticks directly onto the item which needs to be laminated. This method, apart from having the obvious benefit of not requiring expensive equipment, is also suitable for those items which would be damaged by heat. Cold laminators range from simple two roller, hand crank machines up to large and complex motor driven machines with high precision rollers, adjustable roller pressure and other advanced features.

D

D

Depth Gauge

The depth gauge feature allows the operator to adjust the punched hole margin from 3 mm to 6 mm. This adds strength to the bound edge.

Diameter

The diameter is measured in inches or millimetres and relates to the size of the inner diameter of the closed binding element: RENZ RINGWIRE®, plastic comb or spiral binding. The binding element has to be at least 2-4 mm bigger than the thickness of the product to ensure correct turning of the pages.

Diameter symbol Ø

Ø is the shorthand symbol for diameter.

Heavy-duty punching dies

A heavy-duty punching die is a die designed for RENZ® professional punches. Heavy-duty pouching dies consist of high-quality components the pins can be re-sharpened.

Hot lamination

Uses heated rollers to melt glue extruded onto lamination film/pouches. This film/pouch is in turn applied to a substrate such as paper or card using pressure rollers. The primary purpose of laminating with such a machine is to embellish or protect printed documents or images. Heated roll/pouch laminators can vary in size from office based pouch laminators to industrial sized roll machines. Such industrial machines are primarily used for high quantity/quality output by printers or print finishers.

How to calculate the required number of loops

The number of the punched holes results to the required number of loops.

Calculation of the recommended number of loops for the 3:1-pitch:
Binding width in mm / 8,48 mm = number -> to be rounded down to integral number = recommended number of loops.

Calculation of the recommended number of loops for the 2:1-pitch:
Binding width in mm / 12,7 mm = number -> to be rounded down to integral number = recommended number of loops.

Kaschieren

In German, the word "Kaschieren" is used as a synonym for lamination or laminating.

L

L

Laminating pouches

Pouches can be bought with different thicknesses in microns referred to as mic. Standard home or office machines normally use 80–250 mic pouches.

Lamination

Lamination is a process of protecting documents through applying film of plastic on documents. It is a good way of protecting documents from damage and also from wear and tear. Laminated documents are waterproof and tear proof.

Loop(s)

Name of the single parts of the wire comb binding.

The required number of loops for a binding is determined by the binding width and the pitch.
For DIN formats international approved standard lengths are normally used.

Loops

The number of loops required for the binding width based on the type of binding element or pitch.

Loose leaf binding

A binding made up of single sheets of paper or other material, with holes punched into the paper and held together by RING WIRE, plastic combs, spirals or coils.

M

M

Margin

The margin is the distance from the punched hole to the edge of the sheet usually measured in millimetres. The greater the margin the stronger the binding edge, this is dependent on the size of the binding element being used.

Maximum punching thickness

Publisher binding style

One-piece cover style that opens in reverse, creating a flat spine for easy identification.

Punching die

Punching die is a part of the punching machine. RENZ® punching dies are high quality German engineered punching dies. Bespoke dies for any punch pattern are available on request dependent on machine type.

Punching die, two-part

The split two-part dies with thumb cut allow block book punching as well as calendar punching without the need to invest in a second die.

Punching pins, disengageable

If the several pins of a punching die are disengageable you can simply pull the pressure pieces and the die is deactivated in this area so that there is no hole punched.

This is especially interesting if lots of different formats need to be processed.

RING WIRE spools

High-quality RENZ RING WIRE® spools are available in all diameters, colours and pitches for high speed production.

Roll Film

Roll laminators typically use two rolls to complete the lamination process, with one roll being on top and the other roll on the bottom. These rolls slide onto metal bars, known as mandrels, which are then placed in the machine and feed through it.

Roll film thickness

Laminating roll films come in thicknesses ranging from 40 mic to 250 mic. The roll laminator will specify the film thickness compatible for the product.

Roll laminators

A heated roll laminator uses heated rollers to melt glue extruded onto lamination film. This film is in turn applied to a substrate such as paper or card using pressure rollers. The primary purpose of laminating with such a machine is to embellish or protect printed documents or images. Heated roll laminators can vary in size from office based to industrial sized machines. Such industrial machines are primarily used for high quantity/quality output by printers or print finishers.
